Get Involved II--More Extra Credit Opportunities

One of the best ways to learn about any people and time period is to look a the art, music, and literature that comes from that time.  This week, you'll have a couple of great opportunities to get some of that extra insight into history the arts and literature provide.

Tonight (Thursday, October 16), tomorrow, and Saturday, the NSU theater department presents "On the Verge."  The show starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Williams Library "Round Room."  Also tonight is the annual aria and concerto competition.  The aria portion of the competition begins at 5:00 p.m. in Krikac auditorium.

For extra credit, just add a comment to the post here indicating how either the play or one of the musical numbers you listened to ties in to the study of history.

  1. One of the runner ups from the instrumental competition played a piece from Wolfgang Mozart, who we listened to in class in the movie. Kylie did a wonderful job portraying Mozart's fast tempo and smooth sounding notes. In the vocal competition Lara Brink also sang Mozart. It kind of came off to me as an opera type song.It was hard to really know what was going on because it wasn't in english but it was still over all they did a wonderful job!

  2. During one of the movies we watched in class we learned a lot about Mozart and the types of music he composed. In the instrumental side of the competition, Kylie Rusch performed one of his songs. She did a great job portraying his upbeat allegro tempo while slurring together the notes in parts so it transitioned smoothly. On the vocal side, Kaitlin Buchholz did a fantastic job showing emotions throughout the song. Even though I couldn't understand what she was singing, I could tell she was passionate about the music.

  3. During the play, "On the Verge" three women travel through time. As they travel you learn more about the customs of their times compared to the times that they are entering into. From women never wearing slacks, to the fad of leather pants and from the slow classical music to the rock and roll of the 50's, you see thier characters trying to adjust to the many cultural changes that took place in the United States.

  4. During the play the first thing I noticed was the way they talked. Everything was so proper, never using any slang. The further they travel through time, the more they struggled understanding the modern english language. All the women had corsets instead of pants or shorts. In that time period they had to always dresses to the ground even if they were time traveling through the forest.

  5. The play was somewhat confusing to be at first as I went into it completely unaware of the plot or anything that it would contain. The language used really made you have to think, which soon came to easier and expected. The traveling through time and space essentially was very different and interesting and made the play very intellectually challenging to me. It was neat the way the whole play was set up and I am now very glad I was able to go!

  6. During the concert the singers sang songs by Mozart and they made facial expressions that really expressed what they were singing. Even though I couldn't understand the words, they way they portrayed it you could see the struggle in their face about the story

  7. The play took you through a history journey. Staring at a point in time when it wasn't lady like for women to wear trousers, they had to wear their corsets and ending during the time when rock-n-roll was just getting popular. The characters did a wonderful job at adjusting to their time traveling and ending up in different eras. It was obvious they put a lot of time and effort in to this play and they portrayed their characters well.

  8. During the play they took you through a journey of history. The ladies wore dresses and during the play they went through swamps and one of the girls thought they they should be wearing trousers. I really enjoyed the second half of the play where they did the casino and rock-n-roll scenes. The characters did a great job on the production with only four of them. You can tell that they put a lot of hard work into the show.

  9. Throughout the play it slowly showed the three main characters going through different time periods. The girls got to a time during the second half that they fell in love with. It was all about rock and roll and it was during this time that women could wear pants and that was okay. The actors did a great job adapting to the different time periods and they did an amazing job of keeping the audience awake and wanting to see what happens next. Overall the show was very well put together and portrayed.

  10. I thought was the play was very good. At first, I was quite confused by the language they were using. But as the play went on I slowly got used to it and began to understand it better. That's the biggest thing I took from the play was the unique language. The play kept me entertained from start to finish. It was a very good play

  11. Much of the performances were from earlier periods of history. Some of which we have discussed in class. I find it interesting that the music from these time periods describes so well the times in which they were written.

  12. The play showed us the ancient history And the three main periods of history. That was a great source of knowledge. The interesting part to me was their language that they never use any kind of slang in their language.
